Description
West Africa, Burkina Faso or Mali, Bobo peoples. A large carved wood mask or headdress of elongated form, with a projecting tapering face and openwork superstructure. The upper panel is carved with a geometric lattice and painted in red, yellow, blue, green, black, and white pigments, with triangular, dotted, circular, and crosshatched motifs throughout. The lower mask section is similarly decorated, with a ridged central crest and long tapering snout-like form.
Masks of this general type are associated with masquerade traditions among the Bobo and neighboring groups, where bold geometric color schemes and abstracted animal forms could serve ritual, performative, and protective functions.
Height: 53 3/8 in. (135.6 cm) Width: 21 5/8 in. (54.9 cm)
