Bulu Zoomorphic Tribal Mask

Description

Central Africa Late 19th - Early 20th Century Bulu peoples.

A carved wooden mask of compact, rounded form, the face rendered with simplified features including almond-shaped pierced eyes, a broad nose, and a slightly open mouth revealing incised teeth. The ears project laterally. The surface displays a darkened patina with areas of wear and abrasion, alongside patches of lighter exposure where the surface has been worn through handling. The overall effect is one of age-softened texture, contributing to the mask?s visual depth and character. The reverse is hollowed, consistent with traditional carving practices. Height: 8 in. (20.3 cm)Width: 8 in. (20.3 cm) Mounted on a later custom stand for display.

Condition

Surface wear, abrasions, and minor losses throughout, consistent with age and use.
