LAPKOWSKI WACLAW: (1913-1941) Polish fighter ace of World War II, credited with 6 victories, who commanded 303 Polish Fighter Squadron and participated in the Battle of Britain. A rare D.S., Lapkowski S/L, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (RAF Northolt, West London), n.d. (4th June 1941). The typescipt document, originally part of a larger Combat Report, relates to the destruction of an enemy aircraft and states ´We had crossed the French coast near Le Touquet at 15000 ft. and above cloud, but seeing no E/A in the air I ordered the Squadron to fly north towards Calais. On the way there we lost height to about 4,000 ft. and as cloud was about 6/10ths I decided a low level attack on an aerodrome S.W. of Calais, probable Coquelles. About 8 Me.109´s were dispersed on the ground and I fired my cannons and m/g at one of them. I am sure I hit it but could not make sure of results as the ground defences were very active all round´. Autographs of Lapkowski are rare in any form as a result of him being shot down and killed in action over the English Channel at the young age of 27. VG
