An original screenplay from the production of Mel Brooks' classic, controversial Western spoof Blazing Saddles (Warner Bros., 1974), under its early title Black Bart. In original studio wrappers, February 6, 1973, and labeled "FINAL." A disclaimer on the front reads, in part: "This script is the property of Warner Bros." "J. Levine - TV" is handwritten on the front wrapper?this script may have been used in producing the television edit of the film. On the title page, a disclaimer reads: "Please return this script to Production Manager when picture is completed."
Even during production, the film was controversial, and Brooks faced resistance and censorship from potential cast members and studio executives over topics ranging from the script's use of a derogatory term for Black people to its infamous scene depicting cowboys farting around a campfire (flatulence had rarely if ever been seen on screen at the time). The TV edit of the campfire scene, replacing the sounds of farting with horses whinnying, is particularly notorious. However, the film was a critically acclaimed hit and was number one at the box office when it was released in 1974. It is viewed by many as an expert use of satire to illuminate and combat racism. Still, it remains a source of controversy and debate, particularly on social media and in relation to concepts of "wokeness."
Mel Brooks will turn 100 years old on June 28, 2026, four days after this Hollywood Legends auction!
