Description
(1841 – 1910) Union brigadier general and one of the youngest in history (21), commanded successful engagements during the Suffolk Campaign and at Hertford NC, and engaged rioters during the New York Draft Riots. Rather sad A.L.S. on mourning stationery, 3pp. 12mo., New York, May 1, 1910, to a Major Hamilton. Dodge writes shortly after the death of his wife, Maria Theresa, in full: ‘I have not been able to answer your most kind & valued letter sooner, for after weeks of intense anxiety & watching night and day – the final blow left me completely poor hearted – as you, dear old fiend of years ago – know thru your own sad experience. We know that these terrible trials are all right for they came thru the dear Heavenly Father, who does only what is best for his children – tho the strange mysteries of life are often so incomprehensible to us poor ignorant mortals. In this case we can be most thankful that, after so many years of suffering ill health – the precious one is ‘at rest’ – So we could not wish her back here – but as you say – her beautiful Consecrated life - & love must be an added incentive so to live the time yet given us – by his help – that by & bye we may meet again in that better home where there are no more partings… [all sic]’ He signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion. Shows a horizontal mailing fold at center, accompanied by the original black-bordered transmittal envelope, in very good to fine condition overall. Dodge himself would pass away only six months later.
