Description
(1810 - 1878) Prussian military officer and early proponent of communism who emigrated to the United States and became a general in the Union Army, where he was nicknamed ‘Papa’ by his soldiers for his concern with their well-being and gained fame for his defeat of Terry's Texas Rangers. Good pair of signed items, includes: Somewhat shaky A.N.S. ‘A. Willich’ in black ink on a 5 x 3.5 in. slip of paper, adding his rank ‘Brg. Genl.’ and the explanation: ‘Left handed, the right is lamed by a bullet though the shoulder’, a wound he received during the Battle of Resaca. Mounted, shows vertical folds with a 0.5 in. split thereto, and with minor soiling from mounting adhesive, otherwise in very good condition. WITH: Signature ‘A. Willich’ in black ink on a 3.5 x 1.25 in. slip of paper cut from a larger document, adding his rank ‘Brgd. Genl.’ and executed much more fluidly than the example above, likely with his right hand prior to his wounding. Shows some folds overall, with mounting remnants to the verso, otherwise in very good condition. Two pieces.
