Juan Torres is a Spanish contemporary artist and practising surgeon whose emotionally charged portraits explore the complexities of human experience, identity and expression.
Born in Cádiz in 1967 and now based in Seville, Juan's creative journey is anything but conventional. Alongside his career as a surgeon at Hospital San Juan de Dios del Aljarafe, he has developed a passion for painting that offers a striking contrast to the precision and discipline of the operating theatre.
Although creativity fascinated him from childhood, it was in 2022 that painting became an important part of his life, offering both a personal refuge and a powerful means of self-expression. Entirely self-taught, Juan has developed his distinctive artistic language through intuition, experimentation and an ongoing fascination with the human face.
Working primarily in acrylics, his portraits combine carefully observed figurative details with expressive brushstrokes, dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and vibrant, often unexpected colour combinations. His subjects appear caught between moments of stillness and emotional intensity, their expressions suggesting stories that extend far beyond the canvas.
There is a compelling relationship between Juan's two worlds. As a surgeon, he works with the physical realities of the human body; as an artist, he explores the emotions, memories and experiences that lie beneath the surface.
