Details:
Hershel "Woody" Williams autographed glossy black-and-white 10 x 8-inch photograph depicting the historic moment President Harry S. Truman presented him with the Medal of Honor at the White House on October 5, 1945, in recognition of his extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The photograph captures President Truman placing the medal around Williams' neck as the young Marine Corps corporal stands at attention, with military officers and dignitaries observing the ceremony.
Autographed "Hershel W. Williams" in black felt-tip marker across the lower portion of the photograph.
Williams earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on February 23, 1945, when he advanced alone under intense enemy fire to destroy a series of fortified Japanese machine-gun positions using a flamethrower and demolition charges. His extraordinary courage helped clear a path for advancing Marines during one of the bloodiest battles of World War II.
Near fine condition.
