French Carved Walnut Hall Bench, 19th c., Brittany, the stepped back with three floral carved medallions, over lappet carved arms over a lifting lid storage area, above a front with three geometric floral carved panels flanked by figural carved stiles, H.- 41 in., W.- 47 1/2 in., D.- 20 in.
Condition consistent with age and use. Apparent repair to boards in seat with metal strips underneath. Slight gaps in between three boards of the seat, which is not attached to the base. Light wear on the top of the backs and arms. Fading and wear to the finish on the sides. Heavy wear and chipping to the central carving along the bottom. Four 1 inch cracks along the carving in the back. A 5 inch, 3 inch and 2 inch repair with woodfill to the medallion on the right. Approximate 1 inch cracks in the bottoms of both arms. A pea-size hole in the top right corner of the back. An intriguing piece.
