Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French painter and printmaker. He did not paint from life but rather drew his subject—sometimes photographing it as well—and made notes on the colors. He then painted the canvas in his studio from his notes. During the 1880's, techniques of photography had become considerably simplified and it was practised by many painters : from Degas to Munch, including Bonnard and his friend of the Nabi group, Vuillard. Bonnard's subjects were the same as those of his paintings of the time : intimate nudes of Marthe, his favourite model and future wife, or family scenes in the Bonnard parents' property, "Le Clos". He was a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group of avant-garde painters Les Nabis. Bonnard preferred to work from memory, using drawings as a reference, and his paintings are often characterized by a dreamlike quality.
