East Asia, Japan, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A finely-detailed netsuke, carved from an espresso-hued hardwood, depicting an elderly man. He is seated, wearing a drooping hat and long vestment, and holding a small long-tailed mammal in one hand. A pair of similar mammalian creatures sit both beside and in front of him, and his enamored expression displays his affection for these adorable animals. A small signature has been incised into the base. Size: 1.625" H (4.1 cm).
