Civil War Sermon from Holly Springs, Mississippi

The pastor began writing his sermon the first week of August 1864. Within the sermon the pastor then gives account of happenings during that time which reads as follows: "This sermon begun the first week in Aug, 1964 and finished the last week. The Yankees, under Gen A.J. Smith entered Holly Springs on the 1st day of August and left on there retreat, Sunday the 28th. They went as far as Oxford, and burnt that town-ravaged the country with fire and sword, burning houses, destroying crops, stealing negroes and cattle. On Friday the 26th: The Courthouse in H.S. was burnt. An army of 20,000 new Confederates turned back by a few thousand Cav under gen Forest. Who which about 2600 took Memphis on Sunday the 21st. This flank movement made Smith abandon in and around H.S. They broke my room, stole books, clothing.... From plague, pestilence and famine ; from battle, murder, sudden death and Yankees, Good Lord Deliver Us. H.S. Sept 4th 64, May 21, 65." Some yellowing to paper consistent with age. Some wear the the edges and folds. Sold from the private collection of a Southern Gentleman.
