ANTIQUE MEISSEN DRESSER TRAY & JARS SET, PINK WATTEAU, CROSSED SWORDS
STRIKING AND LOVELY ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED, HEAVY PORCELAIN DRESSER SET INCLUDING AN OBLONG TRAY MEASURING 10-1/2" LONG, 7-1/2" WIDE AND 1-1/2" DEEP, WITH TWO LIDDED JARS MEASURING 3-1/4" IN SIZE AND ABOUT 2-1/2" IN HEIGHT. FEATURING A VIBRANT PINK GROUND WITH GILDING ALONG THE RUFFLED EDGES AND SCROLLWORK ACCENTING THE CORNERS AND BASE, TRAY IS DECORATED WITH A LOVELY WATTEAU SCENE OF A PAIR LOVERS IN PASTORAL SETTING - THEY ARE FLANKED BY SHEEP AND WEAR FRENCH PEASANT CLOTHING. SAUCER AREA INTO WHICH THE JARS SEAT ARE EACH HAND PAINTED WITH LOVELY FLORAL BOUQUETS - A TINY INSECT ACCENTS EACH -- ROUND JARS HAVE A BULBOUS SHAPE WITH SOFT PANELING, RUFFLED SHOULDERS AND TINY LIDS WITH MATCHING FINIALS - THE GILDED TRAY DECORATION IS REPEATED ON EACH, AND JARS ARE FINISHED WITH THREE CARTOUCHE WHICH REPEAT THE FLORAL AND WATTEAU SCENES.
THE TRAY SUSTAINED A BREAK AT SOME POINT IN IT'S LIFE - GUESSING REPAIR OCCURRED IN THE MID-LATE 1800S, AS IT IS REPAIRED WITH TWO STAPLES SEATED INTO THE PORCELAIN - THE GLUE USED TO HOLD THE TWO PIECES TOGETHER HAS DARKENED WITH AGE - THIS IS A CLEAN BREAK AND TRAVELS ACROSS THE TRAY AND UP THE SIDES AS SHOWN. ONE JAR FINIAL HAS ALSO BEEN REGLUED AT THE NECK JOINT, AND THERE IS A MINUTE NIP OFF ONE JAR EDGE - VERY TINY AND DIFFICULT TO SEE. ALL THREE PIECES BEAR THE MEISSEN CROSSED SWORDS MARK - THE TRAY MARK IS UNDERNEATH THE GLAZE - THE JAR MARKS ARE ON TOP OF THE UNGLAZED BISQUE - THESE ARE A SET.
