Two sided large figure. Orange, cream colorway with gilt. HN 775.
Mephistopheles & Marguerite is a rare, early double-sided vellum figure designed by Charles J. Noke. It depicts the infernal apparition Mephistopheles and the lovely Marguerite, who holds a prayer book and wears an ivory dress detailed in gilt. Inspiration for Noke's Vellum Mephistopheles and Marguerite was based on Henry Irving and Ellen Terry's roles of the same names in the play "Faust." In a case of art imitating life imitating art, the figure may have inspired a 1928 aquatint etching by French artist Louis Icart (1880-1950), "Faust: Devil and Woman." The Vellum figures were made in limited quantities; all can be described as extremely rare. Gilt throughout.
