Richard MacDonald (American/California, born 1946) patinated bronze sculpture titled "Nureyev" depicting the male ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. Signed "R. MacDonald" and numbered 68/90. This example is the one-third life edition. Sculpture mounted on a stepped round base. Sculpture - 26 1/2" H x 17 1/2" W. 29 3/4" total H. 61.5 lbs, Late 20th century. Provenance: Private Kentucky collection. Biography: Richard MacDonald is a California-based contemporary figurative artist known for his bronze sculptures. He studied painting and illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and worked as a commercial illustrator until his late thirties, when a fire destroyed his studio and its contents. He subsequently began sculpting, and within ten years was succeeding as a figurative sculptor. He is an award-winning fellow of the National Sculpture Society and member of Bohemian Club, Cosmos Club, and National Society of Illustrators. Many of his ballet sculptures, for which he is well known, were created during the time he spent as a visual artist in residence with the Royal Ballet. MacDonald also received the Medal of Honor from the United States Sports Academy and recognition by the United States Olympic Committee for his work commemorating athletes.
