AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES. The Birds of America. 500 hand-colored lithographed plates after Audubon, text without subscribers list. 7 volumes. Royal 8vo, 10½x7 inches, needs binding; plates generally crisp and bright with occasional slight offsetting, text and tissue guards lightly foxed, plate 471 mis-bound; clipped inscription pasted to first end leaf: "I have the honour to remain my dear sir very sincerely your friend & servant John J Audubon, Baltimore March 26th, 1840"; volumes 5 and 7 with bookplate of Brantz Mayer, Baltimore-based contemporary author of books related to Mexico and original subscriber to this octavo edition of Audubon's Birds (offset bookplate ghosting to endleaves of other rebacked volumes, including to the inscription of volume 1). – New York: J.J. Audubon; and Philadelphia: J.B. Chevalier, 1840-1844
