NEW HAMBURG, Canada – A Wurlitzer Model 71 tabletop jukebox on a stand, made in America circa 1940-1941, sold for $14,750 on the second of two days of online-only auctions held June 9 and June 10 by Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. The June 9 auction was dedicated entirely to toys and grossed $141,541 (Canadian); the June 10 sale featured petroliana, advertising and coin-ops and grossed $531,531 (Canadian). US guitar maker Fender opens flagship store in Tokyo, banking on regional growth

TOKYO (AP) – Fender, the guitar of choice for some of the world’s biggest stars from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton, is opening what it calls its “first flagship store” in its 77-year history. The American guitar manufacturer has chosen for its location Tokyo’s Harajuku, a hot spot for Japanese youngsters who love animation, outlandish fashion and, of course, American music. The store was unveiled to reporters June 29 ahead of its official opening on June 30.

NEW YORK — Faberge began as a jewelry firm in 1842 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and is famous for its Imperial Easter eggs. These jeweled and opulent works of art were mostly made between 1885 and 1917, with slightly more than 50 examples surviving today. While it has changed hands and now only focuses on jewelry and gemstones, the House of Faberge was also once well known for its luxury accessories, which ranged from clocks and silver trophy cups to smalls such as snuff boxes and compacts.

The sale, which featured nearly 650 lots, had a 91% sell through rate, totaled $504,439 and produced solid results in all categories. ATLANTA — The High Museum of Art will present George Voronovsky: Memoryscapes from through August 13. It will be the first major museum presentation of work by the late Ukrainian American artist (1903-1982), who transformed his Miami Beach hotel room into a paradisiacal art environment filled with vibrant paintings and carved Styrofoam sculptures in the last decade of his life. The exhibition will feature 60 of Voronovsky’s mostly untitled and undated works, the majority of which depict his early memories of a beloved life in Ukraine that he ultimately felt compelled to leave behind.

LOS ANGELES — John Moran Auctioneers‘ June 6 Art of the American West sale brought phenomenal results, specifically in the fine art category. The star of the show was the Native American artist Oscar Howe, who is best known for his innovative and expressive depictions of traditional Dakota culture and mythology. He had two works in the sale. Each earned six-digit bids, but one achieved a new world action record for the artist at $325,000. Other standouts included a Navajo Late Classic child’s blanket, a sculpture by Allan House, Native American pottery and Hopi and Pueblo jewelry. Harvard Art Museums admission now free for all visitors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard Art Museums have announced a new free admission policy for all visitors, effective immediately. The new policy represents a significant expansion of free access to the museums’ collections, exhibitions and research for public audiences. The museums are open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm Eastern time (except major holidays), and during monthly Harvard Art Museums at Night programs on the last Thursday evening of each month.
