STANSTED MOUNTFITCHET, U.K. – Inspired by Carlo Scarpa’s use of murrine glass in the 1930s and 1940s, Paolo Venini (1895-1959) designed a number of vessels in the 1950s that have become classics of post-war Italian design. Using relatively simple forms, Venini experimented with numerous combinations of tightly packed micro-murrines. The first of these series, a Damo (which translates as ‘checkered,’ or ‘chessboard’) was designed in 1953. The inspiration for this pattern may come from a group of samples made in the 1880s by Vincenzo Moretti, which were on display at the Venice Biennale of 1934.
An 8in (20cm) circa-1953 ovoid form Murrine a Damo glass vase, decorated with turquoise and ruby murine, will be offered as part of the Design sale at Sworders on Tuesday, October 31. It is estimated at £15,000-£25,000 ($18,200-$30,400).

BIG FLATS, N.Y. – The French Revolutionary wars, the series of wars that followed the French Revolution and the establishment of the French Empire under Napoleon, were the catalyst for changing military uniforms. In addition to new styles of coats and breeches, the cocked hat was generally replaced by the bicorne hat, which could be conveniently folded and tucked between the arm and body when removed. For this reason, whether in France or in the U.S., it was known as a chapeau-bras, or “under the arm” hat. Most were made from beaver pelt or woolen felt.
This officer’s chapeau-bras comes up for bidding on Sunday, November 4 as part of the Premier Antique Fine and Decorative Arts sale at Winfield Auction Gallery. It features the national cockade (black satin with the American eagle to the center) that was favored during the War of 1812. Remarkably, it also comes with its original printed card box. The estimate is $4,000-$6,000.

LONDON – Though she enjoyed a long career painting portraits and scenes from Brittany, French artist Marie Lucas-Robiquet (1864-1959) is today best remembered for being one of the only woman Orientalist painters to actually have traveled to the near and middle east to paint what she saw first-hand.
After training in the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias in Paris, in 1891, she married Maurice Lucas, an officer in the French Algerian colonial army. He was assigned to Constantine, eastern Algeria’s capitol, so she traveled with him and began to paint local subjects in a Luminist-Impressionistic style.
Taking Refreshment in Ain-Sefra, Algeria is undated but presumably from the 1891-1895 period when she was in Algeria, prior to her husband’s untimely death. The artwork, measuring 14 by 19.75in unframed, is actually a reprise of a larger version in the Museum of Fine Arts of Nancy, titled Restaurant en plein vent à Ain-Sefra.
Taking Refreshment in Ain-Sefra, Algeria, which is estimated at £30,000-£50,000, or $36,600-$61,000, is a star lot in Sotheby’s The Silk Road event taking place on Thursday, November 9. The sale is comprised of a single collection from a residence in the Belgravia district of London. As Sotheby’s notes, “The Orientalist paintings in this collection form an exceptional group, and a panoptic picture of the Islamic lands as they looked a century or more ago, from when few other visual records survive.”

LONDON – This pair of yellow ground and green enameled dragon bowls have Qianlong (1735-96) six-character marks and are of the period. They will appear in Lyon & Turnbull’s auction of Fine Asian & Islamic Works of Art on Friday, November 3 by family descent from Alex W.V. Gibb, who worked as a clerk in China for the merchants Gibb, Livingston & Company.
The firm was established in Hong Kong in 1841 by two Scottish employees of the British East India Company. In 1844, a branch was founded in Shanghai, and the firm’s Chinese name, Jinkee, was coined. In 1864, the firm had branched out at Fuzhou, where Alex Gibb was based, mainly dealing with the tea trade. Both bowls have a collector’s paper label on the base. The pair is estimated at £15,000-£20,000 ($18,200-$24,300).

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. – The Saturday, November 4 Modern and Contemporary Art & Design sale at Palm Beach Modern Auctions includes this 10in (25cm) bronze by Henry Moore (British, 1898-1986). Titled Reclining Woman: Skirt, it is signed and dated 1981 and numbered 9 from an edition of 9. It was cast by the Hermann Noack foundry in Berlin from a model created in the 1930s.
The lot is accompanied by a copy of the original invoice issued by Dorsky Galleries of New York, New York, dated March 4, 1983, and it comes from a private collection in Boca Raton assembled throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. The collection includes works by Henry Moore, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol that were primarily acquired from galleries in New York and Toronto. The estimate on the Henry Moore bronze is $20,000-$30,000.
