Dennis's auction house 3rd party shipping referrals (UPS Store) is one of the worst I have had to deal with for shipping and Dennis auction services refuses to help in any way and they both point there fingers at each other for the problems and as a out of state customer I loss!!! I will not use Dennis auction house again until customer service improves and shipping practices change. It will be going on a month before I receive my items if even then, 3 weeks now and they haven't even been picked up yet...

Very unhappy with this transaction. I’ve done many many auctions and particularly with copper. They described one piece as 18 inches and it was 9 inches, which is dramatically different. They described another as 9 inches and it was 7 inches, which is tiny. They are completely nonresponsive, and do not accept responsibility for the fact that they misrepresent the items in the auctions. This is completely unacceptable that as a buyer one has no recourse if they just ignore you. Very unhappy about this! Buyer beware! Live auctioneers should reprimand them.

I purchased a ca. 1850 painting of a lady with no frame. The first shipper wanted almost $200 to ship. Dennis Auction suggested I try the second shipper. They wanted a credit card number up front at $150 plus any adjustments for more packing materials. I thought that was ridiculous also based on what I have paid for the 25 plus other portraits I have purchased from other auction houses. And this painting had no frame; just a light-weight oil on canvas on a stretcher. I then came up with the idea of having them CUT THE CANVAS from the STRETCHER and mail me the painting in a roll, as I am skilled in antique painting restoration. It's day three now and I have gotten no response from the shipper. I guess they are done with me. Auction buyers are basically at their mercy, and there is not much mercy. I see in the reviews that others have had trouble with shipping costs. Apparently, it's either pay the shipper what they demand or forfeit your money and your item. I am a retired 9th grade public school teacher; I have never been a problem to anyone, and basically being a nobody to the people there, I don't think anything can be done unless I cave in to their demands. I don't understand why I can't get the painting I purchased for a reasonable amount. I know that shipping companies must make a profit, but fleecing customers can't be helping the auction company, which I believe is a good one. The shipping companies are, in my opinion, making a ton of money at the expense of the auction companies losing bidders and buyers. And no, there is not much luck in getting "pre-auction estimates." Out of the last 20 shippers I have written for estimates, only 2 have responded.

I have found Dennis Auctions to be positively responsive to concerns when raised. They were willing to find a much more effective shipper than they had used previously. This has changed the entire dynamic of participating in their auctions of old toy trains and toys. How shipping is handled can, and does, make all the difference. I heartily recommend Dennis Auctions.

So let me start by saying that I don't have any issue with Dennis Auctions; their operation is totally fine, I have no complaints. However, my concern is the UPS Store that they use for their shipping; this place has a completely unacceptable business practice. Let me explain; I won an item at auction; the size of this piece (a Lionel train accessory) is made of aluminum and is about the size of a shoe box; with a shipping box and packing, we are talking about 2 pounds MAX. Want to guess what the UPS Store wanted to charge me for shipping this item from New Jersey to California? $102! Yup! Of that, $56 for the cost to ship this item, UPS Ground. The rest (close to $50) was their "handling" fee, to include a box, paper, tape, etc... absolutely insane! I just about passed out when I saw this... and this was their CHEAPEST rate. I had decided that I was going to just tell Dennis Auctions to throw the piece in the trash; I won the bid for $35, and I am going to pay $102 for shipping! HA! Fortunately, Dennis Auctions stepped in and ended up shipping the item to me for a GREATLY reduced rate, by the US Postal Service. I am still in shock, I have shipped rifles and shotguns across the country for less money. This was a learning experience for me, as I frequently buy at online auctions and typically never pay much attention to the shipping; most auction houses use their own in-house shipping... those that don't, such as Dennis, use outside agencies, which of course are all "for profit," and some, like this UPS Store they use, are simply on a different planet. Again, I learned a lesson, as now I always look at the shipping segment of the auction details, and if the auction does not offer "in house" shipping, I am not bidding; you are simply at the mercy of places like this UPS Store. I was not shocked to read similar reviews on here about ridiculous shipping prices... unreal...

Lovely chairs. Friendly and responsive auction house!

This was my first time but will not be my last time with Dennis Auctions in New Jersey. Let me first say that now that I know there is no in house shipping, I will bid accordingly. Any issues I have are really with the UPS Store and NOT with Steven Dennis or Dennis Auctions. I felt the auctions were conducted fairly and at a good rate of speed. I bought 24 lots and was happy with 23. One lot had an issue and I am sure Dennis Auctions will take care of this properly or I would not give them five stars. As a 50 year member of TCA (Train Collectors Assoc.) I am fairly experienced and somewhat fussy. Dennis did a really good job and I would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

Dennis is the standard for Auction Houses. I've been to several. They dont come close.
