One of the few professional map dealers in Ohio has opened his private collection to the marketplace and is continuing to sell off many choice items, most of which are in very good or better condition. An authentic Colton 1862 Seat of War pocket map highlights this sale. This map, although completely restored, exhibits the kind of use that suggests it could have been used by someone very close to the action, such as an officer who took part in Civil War planning or actual battles. It is a scarce and very exciting relic of one of the most important periods in American history. This sale features an unusual number of Colton maps—27 in total—from four different atlases covering the entire publishing history of the Colton firm. Several from the first edition 1856 Atlas of the World are offered, as well as a number of maps from Colton’s quite uncommon 1857 General Atlas. Several maps from the scarce 1869 General Atlas are in this sale, plus seven maps from the possibly unique 1890 General Atlas (most sources were not even aware of the existence of this final atlas from the Colton company). Practically all these maps are U. S. state maps. In addition, several 19th century atlases are included in this sale. The Mitchell family of maps also have a strong presence in this auction. Two dozen state maps from as early as 1848 to as late as 1894 are offered, tracing the long influence of the Mitchell cartographic entity. A variety of maps from George F. Cram atlases are here, including a few from the 1882 edition, the last of his atlases to feature hand-colored maps. Several very uncommon but desirable Tunison Peerless state maps are present, both from the 1885 first edition and the later 1887 edition. Scarce American wall maps from the mid-19th century, 17th century hand-colored maps of England, Burritt celestial maps from 1835, vintage 19th century railroad maps and many other authentic antique maps make this a great auction heading into the summer.
