After Dark & Clean Lines
PUBLIC SALE
Photographs from the archive of After Dark and Dance Magazine editor William Como. After Dark was an essential source on dance, theater, performance art, ballet, and cinema of the late 60 and 1970s and a foundational piece of gay cultural history that influenced a generation of artists. The publication was known for covers featuring iconic performers, singers, actors, bodybuilders, and dancers of the day, and its pages were resplendent with staged photographs of individuals and groups posed in artful sittings with renowned photographers. This auction includes original photographic prints from Jack Mitchell, Kenn Duncan, Barbara Morgan, Bruce Weber, Victor Arimondi, Christopher Makos, and Milton Oleaga, depicting subjects including Warhol superstars Candy Darling, Yayoi Kusama, Joe D'Allesandro, and companies like Dance Theater of Harlem and Martha Graham, all in luscious black and white and often exhibiting the kind of intimacy that develops within a close-knit artistic community like the one After Dark helped to create. Auction also includes photos from the archive of Dance Magazine, personal correspondence between editor William Como and various photographers, many male nudes, as well as some rare and seldom-seen photographs of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger and Janis Joplin. Preceded by a daytime offering of Mid-Century Modern furniture and decor.
