Private Collectors Antiquarian Maps

Select items from the personal collection of a long-time map dealer have been assembled for this auction. Several very scarce maps from the United Coast Survey of the early 1850s are present, as well as a number of Allain Mallet’s maps and views from the 1685 and 1719 editions of his Description de L’Univers. All of these items feature exquisite professional modern hand coloring. Several hand-colored maps are on hand from the first edition of Herman Moll’s 1701 A System of Geography. A good selection of maps from Mathew Carey’s 1816 General Atlas are being offered, plus nearly three dozen lovely and very scarce maps from the Carey & Lea 1823 American Atlas. An excellent array of choice maps from six different Mitchell atlases are available, including items from the rare 1846 first edition and extremely scarce 1860 true first edition. The auction is heavy in American maps with good representation from Anthony Finley, J. H. Colt, the Johnson atlases, Potter-Bradley, Cowperthwait, George F. Cram and a spattering of others. Vintage Civil War maps will be found from Edward Ruger and Redfield Proctor and a nice selection of 17th, 18th and 19th century maps of foreign countries are included. All maps are shipped flat. Scans shown beyond paper edge for clearer view of condition.
