Day Two places significant emphasis on postwar and contemporary fine art, led by Hughie Lee-Smith’s 1996 The Yellow Dress, acquired from June Kelly Gallery, New York and Frank Bowling R.A.’s mixed-media work Rosignol (1996), acquired from Peg Alston Gallery, New York. These major works anchor the session and represent two internationally recognized artists whose works are held in prominent museum collections. Further highlights include Robert Rauschenberg’s large-scale intaglio Soviet American Array V (1988–90), as well as works on paper by Marc Chagall and Rockwell Kent, including Kent’s 1933 woodcut Starry Night. Also featured are modern and contemporary works by T.L. Solien, Marilyn McAvoy, Scott Richter, Kip Kowalski, and Jean Dubuffet, broadening the postwar dialogue within the sale. Historical paintings add depth, including Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel’s 1871 genre scene Farewell, John Goodison’s 1853 Bird Hunting, Kaaterskill Falls, and a 19th-century Russian icon with documented family history. A select group of large-format French lithographic posters adds depth, led by Leonetto Cappiello’s Le Thermogène and Cognac Pellisson, alongside works by Faria, Stall, Bellenger, and others. The session is further distinguished by strong design and furnishings. Highlights include a 1945 Steinway & Sons Model M baby grand piano from a prominent Grosse Pointe Park, MI collector; a Charles and Ray Eames 670 lounge chair and 671 ottoman; and additional mid-century modern seating and case pieces from Michigan estates.
