Description
Mantle Border, N. Coast, 1200-1500 AD. Alpaca and cotton. Very finely woven tapestry mantle border with structurally woven checkerboard fringe. The image is of an unknown quadruped mammal with a fish head tail whose position in the serial image alternates direction between two poses, a core duality belief in the Andes. This could be a rendition of the moon ikon. Size: 2'3'' x 4'', 69 x 10 cm (textile); 4'2'' x 1'9'', 127 x 53 cm (backing).
