443: Phenomenal Italian Carved Walnut Three Piece Parlo
Phenomenal Italian Carved Walnut Three Piece Parlor Suite, 19th c., consisting of a settee and two armchairs, the armchairs with a central scrolled crest flanked by seated putti, over pierced backs with scrolling leaves, nuts and flowers, the splat with a central relief carved medallion of a castle, to upholstered arms with scrolled leaf supports and cherubs' head terminals, on massive leaf carved cabriole legs on large paw feet, joined by shaped stretchers, the settee with two chairbacks flanking a central panel with a smirking relief head over an urn supported by fanciful winged gryphons, Chairs- H.- 61 3/4 in., Settee- H.- 61 3/4 in., W.- 65 in., D.- 30 in.
Condition consistent with age. Upholstery has been re done. One repair visible along seam line in back of settee. Minor line of adhesive visible at front of same repair. Minor loss in a few locations of carving throughout: One finger now lacking from one putti, one minor point of loss on left peak of settee, small loss to leaf tips at outer sides of chairs. See additional photos. One chair has very minor worm damage now showing signs of mitigation (putty fille). Age splits running up center of backs along original seams. Back leg of one chair split but stable. Excellent detail to carving and beautiful form.
