James Reeve Stuart: Portrait of a Girl 1886 Oil on Canvas
Signed, dated (Aug. 1886) at the upper right.
Canvas 20"x 16", Frame 23.25"x 19.25"
James Reeve Stuart was an American portrait painter, teacher and Confederate Veteran. Born 1834 in Beaufort, SC. Died in 1915 in Madison, WI. Studied: University of Virginia, Harvard, Royal Academy, Munich, 1860. Upon the start of Civil War in 1861, returned from Germany to Beaufort, and fought as a Confederate artillerist and engineer until 05.01.1865 when he surrendered at Greensboro, NC on with the members of the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery. Exhibited: NAD, 1885. Work at Wisconsin State Historical Museum; University of Wisconsin.
Among others works: portraits of Gen. Stephen Elliott in the Beaufort History Museum and the portrait of Gen. Thomas Jonathon "Stonewall" Jackson in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.
