TITLE OF THE MAP: 'Zaara ou les Desert' (De L'Afrique)
The map covers the Mediterranean and northwest Africa. Includes Canaries. The Niger river is shown (incorrectly) rising in Lake Chad and flowing west to the sea at Cape Verde. In fact it flows in the opposite direction: its source is in the Guinea Highlands in southeastern Guinea. It runs in a crescent through Mali, Niger, on the border with Benin and then through Nigeria, where it discharges into the Gulf of Guinea. Interestingly, most towns marked on the map are in the Sahara desert. Biledulgerid (Bheladal Dsherid = country of dates) was formerly a country in Northern Africa, south of Mount Atlas, bounded on the north by Tunis, on the west by Algiers and the Sahara, on the east by Tripoli, supposed to be about 180 miles square.
