Wonderful and scarce map of the City of New York from S. Augustus Mitchell’s true first edition of his 1846 atlas. This map--bearing the 1846--date has the Carey & Hart decorative borders that do not appear in subsequent editions of his atlases. A very desirable cartographic treasure, this example has a very good ink impression and is highly detailed, showing such things as every slip on the west and east borders and the names and locations of scores of public buildings, hotels, churches, squares and markets. Hand-colored by wards at the time of publishing. This map will appear in various forms in future Mitchell atlases but this is the first, and the only one with the Carey & Hart borders. Three noticeable small stains inside the frame but no staining in map image. Excellent ink impression. Some toning to edges. 12.375 x 15.5
