Lovely and scarce map of the world from a true first edition of S. Augustus Mitchell’s 1846 New Universal Atlas. Map is filled with myriad details, including major rivers, cities and countries. Also shown is a selection of regions the geographer deemed important. Of note are the transportation routes depicted in the oceans. This was also a time of great expansion in the U.S. The Mitchell company updated an earlier version by H.S. Tanner, keeping the Carey & Hart decorative borders only in the very first run of his atlas. The second 1846 edition later that year does not have the Tanner borders, making this map quite scarce. An excellent example of American cartography just before mid-century and a fascinating cartographic artifact. Minor toning and foxing, mostly in the margin. 9.5 x 14.25
