Scarce railroad map of the state showing Carey & Hart decorative borders from the true first edition/first printing of Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s 1846 New Universal Atlas. The Carey & Hart designs were left over from the Tanner maps that Mitchell acquired when he purchased Tanner’s atlas business in late 1845. When Mitchell published a second printing of the atlas later in 1846, he changed the original borders, which had also been used on Henry Tanner’s atlas maps, making the overall layout of this Pennsylvania map unique in the Mitchell production. This is a nice example, with good ink impression and well centered. Railroad routes highlighted in red. The map is hand colored by counties, with a profile view of the Pennsylvania Canal. The map includes Steamboat Routes. Shows towns, counties, roads, canals, railroads and distances. Clean map, with just some light toning at the edges, typical of Mitchell maps of this era.
