S. A. Mitchell, Jr’s initial foray into the map publishing business was a first printing of his New General Atlas, published for a few short months in the beginning of 1860. In the first printing, this map was included and it showed up only for that one printing—it was dropped for a different map in the second printing later that year. This is an exceedingly rare map, and we are pleased to include it in this offering. Plate No. 1, Map of the World on the Globular Projection (dated 1860) is a unicorn that had only a brief life in the Mitchell map universe. Shows the early Mitchell Jr. border used only for the first couple of editions of his atlases. Side frames close to paper edge, as published. Small bit of soiling inside of frame at bottom area.
