Founded in 1849 the original Hotel St. Francis was located on the southwest corner of Clay and Dupont streets. From its beginning it was the most fashionable hotel on the west coast. After being destroyed by fire it was rebuilt and grew to 1,000 rooms, the largest hotel in the west. The hotel published a monthly magazine The Annals of Hotel St. Francis that covered happenings in San Francisco but primarily focused on the many attributes of their establishment and hotel affairs. These two books capture the first two years of publication: Volume I including January 1916-December 1916; Volume II covering January 1917-December 1917. Includes laid in business card and a check from the "Tuesday Luncheon Club Bank". Some annotations to front pastedown of Vol. II.
