CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: A Large Chart of the Channell between England and France done from the newest and best surveys with the flowing of the tyde, and setting of the current, as they were observed in the year 1701 by Capt. Edmund Halley, by His Ma[jes]ties Command. Sold by Richard Mount and Thomas Page of Tower Hill 1702 - To the Rt Hon[oura]ble the Master, Wardens & Assistants of ye Trinity House of Deptford Strond this chart is most humbly Dedicated & Presented by Thier [sic] most humble and obedient Servant, Richard Mount
A large chart of the English Channel by Edmond (or Edmund) Halley. Best known for calculating the orbit of the eponymous Halley's Comet, he made also important and contributions to cartography, of which this map is one such original contribution, being the first map to show the direction (indicated by arrows) and timing of the tides (indicated by Roman numerals) on a map, as explained in the "Advertisment". There is an inset map of the Isle of Wight and Solent, and the coast from Hurst Castle to Bognor Regis on a larger scale, and inset plans of Plymouth Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. The map is sold on three sheets unjoined; a digital composite image is also provided to indicate how the map might look if joined.
