Description
CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Plan of the Position which the Army under Lt. Genl. Burgoine took at Saratoga on the 10th of September 1777, and in which it remained till the Convention was signed'
A fine example of William Faden's plan of the Battles of Saratoga, published by Charles Stedman. The map locates the British, Hessian and American units. Troops are identified by regiment or commander. Artillery is located as is the bridge of boats across the Hudon used earlier by the British. Burgoyne won the first battle of Saratoga, but subsequently found himself trapped by much larger American forces with no relief, so he retreated to Saratoga (now Schuylerville), where he surrendered his entire army on October 17th. His surrender, says historian Edmund Morgan, "was a great turning point of the war because it won for Americans the foreign [French] assistance which was the last element needed for victory." The map, orientated to the west, shows the British troops just north of Saratoga. [Nebenzahl 57]
