Native American, Northeastern United States / Canada, Iroquois people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE; Western United States, Plains tribes, likely Lakota (Sioux), ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A pair of beaded leather triangular bands with fringe - likely made by a Plains Tribe, and a small Iroquois purse. The pink purse box that is beaded on a pink cotton over a stiff board frame- the verso with American flags. This is a decorative piece with a beaded strand handle for suspension, that could have been used as a coin holder or as a decorative whimsey. Iroquois women turned to the traditional skill of quill and newer glass bead working as a livelihood for tourists that wanted unique souvenirs and novelty items. The leather patches were made separately to sell or attached to garments; such as shirt bibs, leggings sleeves, shoulders, and on blankets or saddles. The beads are lane (lazy) beaded onto the surface and highlight an applique red and black felt patch in the center. Size triangle bands: 11" L x 11" W (27.9 cm x 27.9 cm)
