Description
This antique world map, crafted by J. Malherbe around 1720, presents the world in double hemispheres. Showcasing the voyages and discoveries of both the Dutch VOC (East India Co) and its western counterpart, the GWC (West India Co), this map offers a fascinating glimpse into historical exploration. Key features include California depicted as an island, the inclusion of the Great Wall of China, outlines for New Zealand, and partial representation of Australia. Notably, Japan and East Asia are shown near the Alaska region. Country locations are numbered and detailed in a key above the map. Numbers 1-34 denote Dutch voyages from 1594-1665, while 35-47 represent Dutch possessions in Asia. Hand-colored and copperplate engraved, this map measures 18" x 13". Though overall in very good condition, some folding and a centerfold separation are present, which have been closed on the verso. Authenticity is guaranteed.
