Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Native American, Western United States, ca. 1940s to 1950s CE. A small hide flat pouch beaded on the front flap, with fringe and a tassel of cowrie shells. Inside the pouch is a tiny pocket that has a red 25 cent poker chip marked "R & E", an unknown casino / chip maker. The pocket is the perfect size for the chip, and otherwise could hold a few coins or tickets / ration cards. It is also possible this was a umbilical cord or belly button bag; some cultures preserve a newborn?s connection to the mother by keeping the umbilical cord after birth. Some choose to keep the umbilical cord in a small pouch, resembling a medicine bag. The pouch comes framed under glass but is removable. Size of pouch: 3" L x 2.75" W (7.6 cm x 7 cm); frame: 9.75" L x 7.75" W (24.8 cm x 19.7 cm)
