Partially printed DS

A partially printed document signed "Richard Nixon", appointing Albert G. Mumma, of New Jersey, a Member of the Commission on American Shipbuilding. Countersigned by William P. Rogers as Secretary of State. Washington, D.C., dated January 13, 1971. With a white paper seal at the lower left corner. 1p, measuring 16.5" x 13.5". Light toning and foxing scattered throughout. Boldly signed.

Albert G. Mumma (1906-1997) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy who played a pivotal role in the development of nuclear propulsion for warships, having studied marine engineering at the L'?cole Nationale Sup?rieure de Maritime in Paris. During World War II, he served in France and Germany with the Alsos Mission. After the war he returned to the Bureau of Ships, where he was involved with the development of nuclear propulsion. Mumma was promoted to rear admiral in 1954, and assumed command of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. In 1955 he became chief of the Bureau of Ships, where he oversaw the design of nuclear submarines, cruisers and aircraft carriers.
