A first edition copy of "Cases of Contested Elections in Congress from the year 1789 to 1834, Inclusive", signed by future President James K. Polk on the title page as "J.K. Polk". Washington: Gales and Seaton, 1834. 8 vo. 1025 pages. From his legal library. Contemporary sheep, with red Morocco lettering and gilt detailing at spine. Moderate wear, including minor spotting and foxing, with title leaf exhibiting a reinforced gutter margin; evidence of spine repair, preserving a portion of the original. Otherwise good condition with bold signature. Housed in a protected slip case, measuring 6.5" x 10" x 3.5" overall.

Polk studied law in the office of Tennessee's top criminal attorney Felix Grundy, who would later serve as U. S. Attorney General. After establishing his own legal practice, Polk began his political career at the age of 28, being elected to the Tennessee House.
