Description
Cal. 44 S# 3744. Colt’s new army revolver made to replace the dragoon and made concurrently in this serial range with the last dragoons in 1860. Many serial numbers in this range have factory records but we do not have one. Revolvers S# 3770 and 3774 were carried by Raphael Semmes are documented shipped to Richmond Virginia April 15, 1861 in last official legal shipment of Colts to the Confederacy just a day after the Battle of Ft. Sumter, 500 revolvers shipped that day. Over 2000 fluted armies were shipped South at the beginning of Civil War. Southern cash to Samuel Colt in the months leading up to the war spent just as well as Northern cash and Colt was a very good businessman. Standard configuration 4 screw frame made for shoulder stock & fluted cylinder. CONDITION: very good overall, original, and complete, all matching serial numbers including wedge and arbor, backstrap number appears “freshened”. German silver front sight has been shaved to a thinner blade. Markings are crisp, tiny traces of finish to metal, grips are fine retaining about half their original factory varnish. Cylinder retains all six crisp functional safety pins showing light use. Mechanics are crisp, sharp rifled bore with the areas of pitting.
