SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 45 S&W Schofield. S#. 4956. Bbl. 7" round with rib and pinned semi circular bade front sight. Bbl. catch has an oval scoop center with knurled top. 6-shot fluted cyl. Blue finish with case colored hammer and trigger. 2-piece walnut grips. Grip panels have a boxed "JRJR" (James Rockwell Jr.) inspector cartouche. Left grip with "1876" date. Bottom of butt is stamped "US". Bbl. lug has inspector initials "E" and "F". The Schofield was introduced in 1875 and produced until 1887, total production of 8,969 revolvers. The majority were purchased by the U.S. Army with only 685 being sold to the civilian trade. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Smith & Wesson letter from Roy G. Jinks stating: "We have researched your Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield Second Model, United States Government Contract, caliber .45 S&W Schofield, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 4956 was shipped on October 12, 1876 delivered to The National Armory, Springfield, MA. This shipment was for 3000 units and they had 7" barrels, blue finish and smooth walnut grips. We have no records of how the government issued these revolvers to military troops.". CONDITION: the frame and cyl. retain 40% mottled blue showing fading and flaking, with flaking more prevalent on left side. Bbl. has largely faded to a mottled gray appearance. Lightly refinished grips retain visible markings showing handling marks. Sound mechanics. Generally bright bore with sound rifling. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe.
