Smith Carbine
American Civil War
.50 caliber. 21.5" barrel. SN: 2948. Blued barrel, color casehardened frame, steel furniture, smooth walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion break open breechloading carbine with ladder rear sight, German silver blade front sight and sling bar and ring opposite the lock. Standard American Machine Works, Poultney & Trimble and Smith patent markings on receiver. Matching serial numbers on receiver and barrel. A single clear script JH cartouche is present on the reverse wrist. One of the most successful of the American Civil War breechloading carbines, some 30,000 Smith Carbines were produced during the war with the guns seeing service with numerous US volunteer cavalry regiments, including the 7th & 11th Illinois, 17th Pennsylvania and 6th & 9th Ohio. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this serial number, but the closest gun located was #2905 which was issued to Company D of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}

Condition
Very Good to Near Fine. Bore fine and bright with crisp rifling. Barrel with most of the bright blue intact. Receiver with some nice dulled and faded mottled case colors. Markings remain clear and crisp throughout. Mechanically functional action. Wood with some scattered bumps, dings and mars.
