
BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen gauze, top row featuring a central urn with shrubbery flanked by two birds and two flowers in urns, below featuring an eight-row poem titled "Love to God produces love to men." from Sweets for Leisure Hours By A. and E. Phillips with plant motifs in the margins, lower section with a landscape scene depicting a brick house surrounded by trees, birds, and a recumbent stag and lion, bottom row with mostly lost signature next to "1820." date in between two bird in tree motifs, all encompassed by a scrolling floral vine border. Housed under glass in an old wood frame. Dated 1820. 13 1/4" x 16 1/4" sight, 16" x 19" OA.

Good to very good visual condition with linen having light toning, a few stains, and some scattered holes, some thread with light to moderate fading / fugitive color, signature with loss of most thread, a few spots of thread loss on poem, frame with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined of frame.
