Description

Presidential appointment signed by Ulysses S. Grant, dated March 14, 1873. The document appoints Chauncey Harris as Deputy Postmaster at Elizabeth, New Jersey, and is issued on official presidential vellum with engraved heading and the embossed seal of the United States affixed at lower left.

Signed "U.S. Grant" at conclusion, with countersignature of the Acting Secretary of State, the document dates from the opening days of Grant's second presidential term. As both Commanding General of the Union Army and later the 18th President of the United States, Grant was one of the most consequential figures of the Civil War and Reconstruction era.
