(1817 - 1883) Union brigadier general and U.S. Surgeon General who was present at the deathbeds of Presidents Lincoln and Garfield. Bold signature ‘Jos Barnes’ in black ink above his printed title on a 4.75 x 2.25 in. slip of paper cut from his ‘Surgeon General’s Office’ letterhead. Mounted, with a loss at top right and a pencil identifying inscription at bottom, otherwise in very good condition overall. Sold with a trimmed transmittal envelope addressed to a Virginia doctor, with Barnes’ free-franking stamp at upper right. Two pieces.
