(1830-1897) Legendary Confederate brigadier general of cavalry known as the 'Bedford Forrest of the West', he orchestrated Shelby's Raid, commanded 'The Undefeated,' a detachment of roughly 1,000 Confederate soldiers who rather than surrender at the end of the war rode south to Mexico, and sank their battle flag in the Rio Grande to prevent it from capture by the Union. Scarce A.D.S. ‘Jo Shelby’ 1p. oblong 8vo., St. Louis, March 4, 1887. A promissory to J. H. Adams in the amount of ‘…four hundred and ninety five dollars for value rec’d. negotiable and payable…on account’. Tape repair on verso at top edge, mounting strip to verso and a bit of wear to left margin, overall very good.
