Description
(1831-1862) Confederate colonel who assumed command of Jackson’s Stonewall Brigade after the death of Winder at Cedar Mountain, but was himself killed in action at Second Manassas before his promotion to brigadier general could be confirmed. Very rare A.E.S. on a war-date letter, 1p. oblong 8vo., Staunton, VA, May 6, 1862, from a Lt. P. M. Byers, confirming that a Samuel M. Tisdale is a member of his company, and has previously been represented in Byers’ company by a substitute, John Martin, who is to take a leave of absence, with Tisdale to perform militia duties until his return. Baylor adds his endorsement at bottom left, writing ‘Approved’ and signing ‘Wm S. H. Baylor’ in black ink, adding his rank Col 5th Reg N. Va Vol’. Shows folds overall, with minor interior splits thereto, and with archival tape mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise in very good overall condition.
