Description
(1809 - 1898) British statesman for over 60 years, including 12 years as Prime Minister. He was known as an advocate for working-class people, earning the nickname ‘The People’s William’. A.L.S., 2+pp. 8vo., Chester, Dec. 17, 1887 to 'Mr. McCaulley[?]'. A bit difficult to decipher, but Gladstone mentions a statement purportedly made by his correspondent to a newspaper concerning: 'the first Salisbury Government and House Rule'. Gladstone's name had been included in the statement, and citing that fact, the statesman notes: '...it is material for us all, certainly for me, to know correctly what you did say. I am persuaded that this is what you will yourself wish...in such form as may judge most convenient, you will give us now [on] own authority a precise form of the narration...' A few tiny spots and a paperclip stain at top of first page, else very good.
