Description
(1875 - 1965) French physician and theologian, a specialist in tropical medicine. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of 'Reverence for Life', expressed most famously in his founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene. Good content A.L.S. signed in the text and again at conclusion, 1p. 4to., Strasburg[?], 1920, in German. Largely untranslated but apparently discussing various musical selections for a program for a performance to be given by the doctor. A few pencil notations in another hand, else very good. Schweitzer was brilliant in interpreting music, especially Bach, and was determined to learn by heart the works of Bach, Mendelssohn, Widor, Cesar Franck, and Max Reger. He played a piano brought to him in Africa until his last days.
