Oil on canvas by Nelson S. Bowdish (American, 1831–1916), known for his skillful landscapes in the American tradition of landscape painting. The composition features trees and distant mountains with a calm river flowing through the scene. Signed “N.S. Bowdish” lower right. Housed in a gilt frame. Frame measures approximately 28 3/4" H x 44 1/2" W x 1 1/2" D. Some craquelure, surface abrasions, canvas repairs, discoloration, and areas of loss with a hole in the canvas. Frame shows wear to the gilt finish with areas of loss.
